A few months ago we wrote about David Suzuki’s Nature Challenge, a 10-step program to reduce your ecological footprint without making major lifestyle changes: Canada’s most famous environmentalist David Suzuki has issued the Nature Challenge, in response to the question he gets all the time- What can I do? It is a deceptively innocuous and simple 10 step program, but in fact is pretty sophisticated and more importantly, is achievable by almost anyone without making major lifestyle changes. His 10 most effective ways to conserve nature and improve our quality of life:
1. • Reduce home energy use by 10%
2. • Choose an energy-efficient home & appliances
3. • Don’t use pesticides
4. • Eat meat-free meals one day a week
5. • Buy locally grown and produced food
6. • Choose a fuel-efficient vehicle
7. • Walk, bike, carpool or take transit
8. • Choose a home close to work or school
9. • Support alternative transportation
10. • Learn more and share with others
And you don’t even have to do all of them in the challenge, just three. We can talk all day about living a sustainable treehugger lifestyle, but Suzuki’s approach of small, reasonable steps that anyone can do is a great start.
On a more personal note, I’ve been reading David Suzuki’s second autobiography (he wrote the first one when he was 50, and he’s now 70 years old – lots of stuff has happened in the past 20 years) and it is very interesting so far.
